So I’m talking fireworks down at a neighbor’s house, and there’s this woman, looks to be in her sixties, going door to door. My neighbor holds up the flyer he got from her, and by golly, she’s out campaigning for a state rep. So, me being a somewhat political person and smelling a debate on the wind, run down the street, stop her for a flyer, and ask her what her candidate thinks of the second amendment (in the most neutral terms, if you tip your hand, they have something to play to). She says she’s not sure, but points to the phone number on the bottom of the paper and says I should call and ask. I return to my neighbor’s garage and discussion resumes.
About five minutes later a beat up Grand Prix shows up in the driveway, the woman yells “You don’t need to call him” and this similarly aged man hotfoots it across the lawn. I meet him halfway, shake his hand, tell him I applaud his campaign style and that every candidate should be willing to shake the hands and talk to prospective voters. He then gives me a 20 minute discourse on how he carries a .357 everywhere but his hometown when he’s out for his electrician business, he’d vote for concealed carry, and he thinks we should repeal 2 laws for every 1 we enact.
I’m out running that night and I think “What a cool guy this guy is” and “I should vote for him, he’s exactly the kind of person I w…” And then I stop.
He’s exactly the kind of person I want ruling me? Huh? Where did that come from? I don’t want to be ruled. I might like this guy, think he’s a really cool person, but I don’t want him telling me what I can and can’t do.
I am an individual. I was born free. I’ll die free. How I choose to live my life in the interregnum is nobody’s business ‘til I infringe upon their business.
I am a sovereign nation.
The only rules I am bound to follow besides my own are those that are in accordance with natural law, or How Things Should Be. Any laws I follow beyond those I do so out of fear.
The only reason I associate myself with the Libertarian party or is because their ideals most closely match my own. The only reason I strive to see the Constitution Of The United States upheld is because the ideals enshrined within match my own closer than most any other document.
The enemy of my enemy is my friend.
I am a sovereign nation.
Strange, that one little meeting can shake up one's world-view, and yet make so little difference in the long run.
I still believe the United States Constitution is possibly the greatest document and definitely the greatest example of government ever written. I think the Libertarian party, despite its internal cracks and slightly out-there focus holds in its sights the true picture of human freedom. I believe the Republicans are only slightly less evil-slash-stupid than the Democrat party. I believe the Democrats and other sundry leftists are positively inimical to the foundations of liberty and human values.
I still don't want any of them ruling me though.
Because I am a sovereign nation.
