Haven't been to the range for a few weeks, mostly because work started again and I'm in my final semester of college. And I've got to coordinate my schedule with my friend who also has an interest in going to the range.
Since I've blogged last, I bought a new rifle. $1300, very modern, very slick. I'd call it the best rifle on the market, and I know a lot of other people would too. Last week I picked up a variety of magazines for it, 300 rounds of ammo in a variety of brands (Wolf Camo, Wolf Black, and Brown Bear).
It's a well known fact this rifle possesses the WORST iron sights ever included on a rifle. So I was less than sanguine about trying it out today...I knew I had to function test the mags and ammo to decide what to stockpile, but I didn't want to just burn through $100 worth of ammo just blazing away without hitting anything.
Even with the worst irons ever invent, this rifle is still more accurate than I am. A little low and right, just a hair, but from a rest it grouped beautifully at 25 yards. Without a rest it grouped beautifully at 25 yards. Moved it out to 50 yards (a distance I don't usually shoot with my rifles, but which I'm attempting to learn) and it grouped nicely there too.
I can now safely say that I'm confident in stockpiling the absolute cheapest ammunition manufactured, because I know it will function perfectly, and be as accurate as I need it to be.
The magazines were interesting. The cheap magazines functioned perfectly. The worlds-best polymer magazines functioned perfectly. The most expensive magazines didn't lock the bolt back once, and wanted to skew the rounds as I loaded them. Not cool. I trust the magazine, having run it a second time, but I will not buy another.
Also ran 47 rounds of S&B 9mm through my Beretta 92, shooting at 25 yards. Good accuracy from that - which I didn't expect, usually I have trouble hitting the 25 yard target with a pistol. Now I need to function test the Wolf 9mm again. If it continues to give me problems, I have to rotate my entire 9mm stockpile out, replacing it with S&B. Like I needed one more thing to spend my money on...
A fun day was had by all.
